Thankfully SKYBELL finally came out with a slender version! They saved me...

October 30, 2018
Style: Video Doorbell Pro
Dont like : Monthly fee. Incessant selling to sign up for monthly fees. No dowload recording or view past activity without monthly fee. Broke my ringer (actually melted it). Didnt find/register my address/location. Expensive one time purchase. Requirement for addional hw.
What i liked- slender profile. Customer service was helpful after my chime melted.
Had a Skybell HD at my old house - the original disc one fit well on my Shaker style door molding. It workrd wonderfully with only minor glithes - even when overseas (we watched as prospective home buyers visited the house, and could guage enthusiasm as they left, as well as how much time they spent. Some of the verbal comments were priceless). And we could see past events without monthly fees. I was heart broken to leave Skybell behind when moved to newly constructed house - the disc doorbell would look terrible, not to mention wouldnt fit without destroying very expensive molding.
So i bought a RING. Overall reviews are very good (guess the never had a SKYBELL). installation was fine, picture quality good. As expected. But i refuse to pay a monthly service fee, especially when my previous experience was great without one. Then a month later my dootbell started acting funny. Turns out my chime melted internally (the little push rods that spring to hit the chime bar are made of plastic). Never having to get intimate with a chime before, i started trouble shooting. Pretty much figured out the issue, called RING help desk. They were quite good and helpful after we got over the whole idiot user syndrome, a couple of pictures, and their digging into the RING data they had on me. It is TOTALLY amazing the data they keep from their device. Yes, it really was installed for one month and working fine. They surmise i might have a bad transformer (in my 1 month old house). They were good enough to send me a new transformer and new chime booster (the little white box attachment into the chime), i had to purchase my own replacement chime. RING has worked well for 2 months since then. The app is REAL annoying - even though i informed it (and them) i DO NOT want/will not pay a monthly fee, most of the time i used the app, i had to tell it again before it let me see the picture. Real annoying especially when you are trying to rapidly answer the doorbell.
In steps SKYBELL (purchased by Honeywell). They finally released a SLIM version of their HD cam. It is actually skinnier than the ring. Got it today, deistalled RING, and installed SKYBELL. Instalation was easy. Life is good, and ZERO monthly fees!
==========
We were looking for better security at the front of the house, and wanted a system where we could view visitors and speak to them easily, plus have a record of any movement around our front doorstep - and we didn't want to be installing wiring, or deal with changing batteries. A number of solutions are available, but the more well-advertised ones (naming no names) will store videos for you but charge a monthly fee for the service - and while there seems to be a move towards pay-as-you-go 'services' for everything, I'd rather not bleed money forever because of my doorbell... so any bell requiring a monthly plan was out.
This doorbell fitted the space available better than Skybell's round models, and attached to the wires behind my current bell with no issues. Once installed, just download the app (works with the iPhone - I don't know about the other options) and follow a few instructions to securely link the bell to your home WiFi - and that's all. I have had the bell for a month now, and my Apple Watch buzzes every time the bell rings at home or the motion detectors go off, and if I want to review activity later, videos are automatically saved to the cloud for a week - FREE OF CHARGE.
The installation and operation has been hassle-free, but here are a few issues that are minor gripes for me, but might be useful to know if you are considering a Skybell:
- Make sure your WiFi signal reliably reaches the bell location; if connectivity is lost, the Skybell alerts you (and passing thieves) by flashing a range of colors. Maybe not the smartest feature, guys.
- The motion detection is not very configurable, and my camera can see the street, so I get plenty of bogus notifications. I have used cameras in the past that allowed the user to specify which parts of the image need to move for a detection, and that would be a great improvement here.
- This bell can be bought with an angled base so you can point the camera a little. I'd suggest buying it together with the bell in case you need it (for something like $6)- I wasn't able to find one for sale separately (but that could just be me).
- Skybell evidently decided to partner with Honeywell for the sale of this model, and I found it for insane prices ($400+) from some Amazon sellers, perhaps mistakenly thinking this is some specialist commercial model (or hoping you do). Mine is identical to the 'slimline' Skybell model available for home use, despite the Honeywell co-branding. Check for the best price.
Overall, this works great and I'd strongly recommend it!

I downloaded the SkyBell app to my iPhone and followed the directions to add the SkyBell to our WiFi network quickly and easily. Every movement around the front door now gets recorded (no false alarms so far) and there are no monthly fees which is a great selling feature. Erasing video clips is intuitive as is managing the various settings on the app.
If there is one minor criticism it is that the images are somewhat distorted because of the 180° field of view. Perhaps the playback feature could have an option to correct for this so that people's faces aren't so distorted. This is a minor quibble as the picture quality aside from that is excellent.

Installation is easy if you have a mechanical door chime. I installed it in minus 20 degree weather and that was the only hard part as fingers froze.
I downloaded the app, created an account, followed simple instructions on how to add the device.
Of note:
1. To speak you have to keep the microphone button pressed. Release when you want to hear. Much like a walkie-talkie. I set the speaker volume to maximum and it worked fine. It records all sound and motion.
2. You need to swipe to the left on a video that you want to download and the select the download icon. This is on an android phone.
I am glad that I installed it in cold weather. No battery meant no issues unlike its competitor that would often give me black screens even though it was hard wired.
The skybell replaces its main competitor whose product did not perform well over two years in cold weather right up to its demise.
So far I am impressed with the skybell device quality, ease of use, the app, performance in cold weather (-20) and image quality. No fees either!

First, I confirmed with SkyBell Tech support that the Honeywell SkyBell DBCAM-TRIM sold on Amazon is the same product as the SkyBell Trim Plus. The only difference is the packaging and the fact that the warranty is processed through Honeywell instead of Skybell.
Apps:
This unit works with the SkyBell HD app which is available for Android and iOS. I tested it with an Android phone, iPhone, and an iPad with no real issues. Occasionally I get a "Stream could not be established" error, but if I wait a couple seconds and try again it usually loads the video. Unlike Ring, there is no Windows app or any ability to access it from a web browser.
Both SkyBell and Ring allow you to pinch and zoom a live video. Ring allows you to pinch and zoom an existing recording on the cloud, but SkyBell does not. Ring also allows you to flag favourite videos (to help you organize), while SkyBell does not.
Video Quality:
This unit is 1080p up to 15 fps (frames per second). Image quality is excellent, but the frame rate is half that of my Ring which is 30 fps. You do notice the lower frame rate as videos are not as smooth, but it's perfectly fine for the purpose of seeing who is at your door.
The SkyBell field of view is 180 degrees so it creates a slight fisheye view (slightly curved). It's not that bad though, and the advantage is the camera picks up a larger field of view. The Ring Pro field of view in comparison is 160 degrees.
Night Vision:
I was very impressed with the Night Vision of the SkyBell unit. When it started to get dark out (sun had set but still some light), the images still looked like it was daylight. At night, it still has full colour night vision. When I reviewed a video of myself coming home at night, I could easily see myself on the video in full colour even though it was so dark that I had difficulty seeing to unlock my door.
The Ring on the other hand does not have colour night vision (it's black and white). When there is still a bit of light out, I can make out features even at a distance, but when it's really dark I can only make out some features that are closer to the camera. However, the moment the floodlight turns on, the Ring shows everything in full colour.
Cloud Storage:
SkyBell offers free cloud storage for videos taken (On demand, motion activated, or when the doorbell is rung) on a rolling 7 days of active history. Once a video is 7 days old, it is automatically deleted. However, you can manually download any of the videos before they are deleted if you want to keep them. Considering this is free, this is a huge advantage over Ring.
Ring offers a 30-day free trial for their cloud services. After that, you have to pay $3USD per month or $30 USD for a year. This gives you 60-day storage of your videos. As with SkyBell, you can download any video you'd like to keep permanently. I had to pay in USD so you may also have to pay a foreign exchange rate fee. It ended up costing me $40 CAD for a year.
Motion Detection:
This is where the SkyBell unit comes up short. The Ring is much more powerful with the ability to customize motion zones (areas of detection). My Ring detected animals and people very easily anywhere in my detection zone. However, it also picked up the shadow of a tree moving during windy days resulting in false notifications to my phone. In contrast, I have not gotten any false notifications from SkyBell, but it also missed motion it should have detected.
SkyBell gives you three sensitivity options which they define as:
High - Detects a person walking parallel to your SkyBell at approximately ten feet, with limited detection of a person approaching from front.
Medium - Detects a person walking parallel to your SkyBell at approximately seven feet, with detection of a person approaching from the front out to approximately three feet.
Low - Detects a person walking parallel to your SkyBell at approximately five feet, with detection of a person approaching from the front out to approximately five feet.
Initially, my SkyBell would not detect anything unless it was within 15-18" of the unit regardless of the setting (I tried waving at different distances). It was even possible to walk to my door, unlock it, and walk in, without the SkyBell detecting my motion. It seemed to improve after a few days and now it almost always detects my presence. In this last week, it missed 1 of 20 entrance/exits while walking directly in front of the sensor each time.
I will also note that the SkyBell does not appear to detect motion beyond my glass enclosure. This was also true for my brother's Ring doorbell. In some sense this is good as it will not pick up false motion reads from the street and will only activate when someone is at the door.
Size / Footprint:
The SkyBell Trim Plus is 4.8" (H) x 1.44" (W) x 1.13" (D) while the Ring Pro is 4.5" (H) x 1.85" (W) x 0.8" (D). I chose the SkyBell because of its smaller width to fit on my existing door frame. The Ring Pro was a bit too wide.
Electrical Requirements:
The SkyBell unit requires 8 to 30 VAC, 10 VA while the Ring Pro requires 16-24VAC. The larger supported range for the SkyBell was important to me as my initial measurement was 15.8VAC with a cheap multimeter. I later measured 16.2VAC using a Fluke multimeter which is more accurate.
Technical Support:
Both SkyBell and Ring have adequate technical support as long as you only have basic questions. Don't expect to ask anything about wiring or electrical requirements as neither are capable of providing support beyond software setup and basic product information. In fact, they both gave incorrect technical information. For example, two separate SkyBell Technicians kept insisting that my available 16.2VAC was insufficient to power the SkyBell, even though the spec clearly indicates 8 to 30 VAC is supported (which means ANY AC voltage between 8 and 30 VAC should work). They said 19VAC minimum was needed. When I found a 24VAC transformer, they told me that also wouldn't work because it would burn out the SkyBell unit. When I asked them to recommend a transformer, they recommended a 16VAC/10VA transformer (same as my current one) in order to get 19VAC.
I decided to give up on their Technical Support and asked Amazon if I was allowed to install and test the unit myself to see if it would work. They said yes, and told me I could even return it for a refund if it didn't work (thank you Amazon!). I did that and it worked with no issues. For clarification, I measured 16.2VAC at my doorbell and I have it connected to a mechanical door chime.
Note that if you have a digital doorbell, you'll need to purchase an adapter (not included). To check if you have a mechanical doorbell, press and hold your doorbell. If you only hear the "ding", and then release the button and then hear the "dong", you likely have a mechanical doorbell.
Conclusions:
Generally speaking, I'm happy with my purchase. I'd still chose the SkyBell over the Ring because of the free cloud storage and the far superior night vision. Hopefully they can improve their motion detection in subsequent software updates, and add the ability to access the camera using a standard desktop (e.g. Windows app or through a browser). For now, this unit gets 4/5 stars.
So these days it can happen anywhere!!
We decided after that to get the door bell and cameras and we have not been disappointed. The door bell works extremely well and I can access if from anywhere I am. It also sends me a chime signal when someone is at my door
or near and I can talk with this person no matter where I am in the country as long as my cell phone is connected to WIFI. I was also able to download the APP to my husband and daughter's phone so they are also aware.
Very easy to install and setup the APP!
We also purchased the angle backer piece as our door bell is in a tight area and this allows for more of a view.
Fantastic even at night! We have no neighbours across the road but another street byond the field several hundred
feet away and I can see the lights of the cars from that distance at night on the Sky Bell!
I always see my Amazon delivery person too!! LOL!!
Update Oct 2020
Only "issue" with this video doorbell (and may apply to competing products) is that bushes on either side of door would trigger motion detect in anything over a very light breeze. Adjusting sensitivity was no help and I had to disable alerting on motion.
Other "problem" may not be SkyBell's fault, but using android Skybell app, sometimes it's rather slow to be alerted on your phone (internet, SkyBell server, app, or cellular connection delays?). A patient visitor you can greet thru the app, but delivery guys are gone before you even get alerted. So the commercials where video doorbell alerts owner of would be package thief is optimistic.
